The Barns

Our two barns. the barn on the right of this picture is the younger of the two. One third of this barn has been converted into a small house (the barn house).  This barn will not be converted into a dwelling.

The barn on the left of the photo was the first to built, we think probably just after the French Revolution, and is probably about just over 200 years old. We are planning to convert this barn into our house. When we first took possession of the property the barn was far from empty, being full of all sorts of rubbish!

The barn consists of a central area full height and two side bays. Originally these bays were for the cattle who would be herded into the side, and stick their heads through spaces into the main area to be fed. The left hand bay was being used as a wood store when we viewed the property and the right hand bay was being used as a car workshop. The wood was cleared from the left hand bay but all the bits of car and assorted junk in the right hand workshop was left behind! Above the two bays were haylofts, There was a lot of clearing out from them too, we found rusty old bikes, oil cans and several old sewing machines - none of which were worth saving. The local tip got to know us very well when we cleared the barn to start work!
