WalkingThe Haute Vienne boasts 2000 km of marked footpaths and a section of the long-distance GR4 footpath so there is plenty of choice for even the keenest of hikers. Walks can cover areas of particular scenic interest or be concentrated over short distances, often themed such as botanic walks, walks to discover local heritage etc. Locally, there are a number of walks available, all well signposted and detailed in a leaflet published by the local tourist information office and available in your Gîte. Three RiversClassified 'Orange' and having a distance of 22 km, the '3 Rivers' walk encircles Oradour sur Vayres starting at the Dolmen de La Tamanie. This walk passes the Chateau de Brie and various other view points and places of interest on the way. OratoriumThere are two Oratorium walks, both classified 'Yellow'. The first is 6 km in length and also starts at the Dolmen de La Tamanie and then continues into the small town of Oradour sur Vayres where it visits an old tramway and railway station and back to the dolmen via an ancient mill. The second Oratorium walk is 8 km in length. It starts at the small park behind the town hall in Oradour sur Vayres and heads out of town, via La Tronchaise and back to the town's church, passing several interesting sights and buildings on the way. The Rose WalkThe nearby town of Vayres has a walk dedicated to the discovery of wild flowers related to the rose. A beautifully illustrated handbook accompanies the walk. The Green Way- Oradour sur Vayres to ChalusCreated from an old railway line the route takes you through an unspoilt natural space where walkers, cyclists, roller-skaters and people of reduced mobility can travel in peace and security. The full length of the Green Way is 13 kilometres and it is managed by the French Association of Cycle routes and Green Ways. |
